Teacher, does coding haunt you? You’re not alone.

September 12, 2022, Code School Finland

Coding has become an area of curriculum that haunts many teachers.

I’ve tried studying coding with online tutorials before but I’ve always run into problems and quit.

There’s a huge variety of online coding platforms and programs available, both free and paid. How do you compare all of them?  Picking one that would work best for your class and schools seems like a very tough decision.

Once you have selected a platform, many more questions arise. What kind of projects to make? In which order to introduce various coding concepts? How to tackle all sorts of challenges that occur in the classroom?

The anxiety of how to teach students something that you know nothing (or very little) about is a huge barrier. How do you know that you’re doing the right thing?

I’ve never been quite sure what I need to study to be able to teach my class the right things.

Through our experiences with training and supporting teachers in many different countries, we know the everyday obstacles in primary, secondary and vocational schools. We have evaluated dozens of coding platforms and programs as well as numerous national and international curricula objectives. Shortly put, our team of pedagogical experts have spent years putting in the efforts to understand the scene so that individual teachers do not need to.

Our best practises for tackling the problem are:

  1. Package up everything a teacher needs to teach a cross-curricular coding project. With everything we mean student materials, teacher’s own manual, lesson plans, presentation materials and assessment tools.
  2. Adopt a teaching model where the teacher is not the Know-it-all person. That actually works in the favor of students’ learning too.
  3. Make available a real person who has the expertise to support teachers hand-to-hand. Having a person to turn to with all questions, challenges or insecurities who is capable of offering personal support will guarantee the success for all teachers.

Teacher, do you think the three practises described above would help you to teach a high-quality coding program? Let us know!

In order to promote the best practises, we are launching a series of online instructor-led training courses for various levels of teachers. Finally, teachers all over the world will have a friendly expert to hold their hand through the first coding project and pat their back when done.

I especially appreciated the possibility to talk to a real person whenever I had challenges. It really felt like having a co-teacher in my class.
