Code School Finland partners with Hanau City together with Google to boost coding education in schools

January 30, 2024, Code School Finland

Code School Finland, Google and the City of Hanau in Germany are pleased to announce ‘Code School Hanau’, a digital upskilling programme for teachers in the Hanau area.

“We know from research that it is important to start early if you want to spark the interest of young people in technology and natural sciences. With the Code School program, schools and young people in Hanau will have the opportunity to be at the forefront in terms of digital skills. We are very happy to make a contribution here.”

Salomé Eggler

Google Data Centers Program Manager

For the past 3 years, the Code School Europe project has been running as a coding and robotics education programme in schools near Google’s data centres in Finland, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark. Hundreds of teachers have been trained as coding educators and teacher trainers and thousands of students have had the chance to begin their journey in digital literacy. Skills such as computational thinking which underpin the project have a direct bearing upon the creation of a knowledge economy in the future.

January 25th 2024 stakeholders from Google’s new data centre in Hanau as well as City of Hanau personnel met at the Medienzentrum Maker Space to see at first-hand the work that the centre does with local teachers. Over the past number of years, Hanau has invested heavily in digital infrastructure for local schools, from electrical renovation, to connectivity, to the rollout of digital devices for students.

Training starts in April

In April, Code School Finland lead trainers will work with staff from the Hanau Maker Space to train local teachers both online and onsite in Hanau. Teachers will learn how to use block-based programming environment Scratch with their students. The program will also include training teachers as trainers to scale the project locally.
