Demystifying AI for educators: practical tools for the classroom

April 24, 2024, Code School Finland

In an age where artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly spreads into every aspect of our lives – from the way we create art to how we interact with digital assistants – educators around the world are wrestling with questions: Should we use tools like ChatGPT in the classroom? Can AI-generated images be considered art? How does AI really work? How do we demystify AI?

The annual Interactive Technology in Education (ITK) conference in Hämeenlinna, Finland, attracted nearly 2000 participants this year with AI as its central theme.

The discussions at the conference underscored a vital point once more: educators need robust support to navigate the AI landscape. This support is not just about answering theoretical questions but the focus must be in providing practical, hands-on training that can be directly applied in the classroom.

As part of the national Generation AI project, we participated the conference to offer practical advise and tools for teachers. The keynotes and workshops we held at the conference served to demystify AI for both teachers and students, illustrating AI technologies and their implications in everyday life.

Our Head of Pedagogy, Jussi Koivisto, demonstrated the Social Media Machine in the conference, showcasing its capabilities as a teaching tool.

Code School Finland helps teachers to adopt new AI tools but also to develop the necessary skills to effectively impart AI knowledge to their students.

It is indeed an honor to be at the forefront of innovation and educational technology alongside top researchers and specialists. However, the real honor lies in empowering educators—those on the educational front lines—with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to guide their students through the complexities of AI.
