Working with Google to upskill teachers in local communities

Code School For Europe Project

In 2021, Code School Finland sealed a partnership with Google to enable teachers in Finland’s provincial communities to teach coding and robotics to primary school students. Since then, the project has expanded and by 2024 reached local communities in Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Germany thus becoming a pan-European teacher upskilling programme.

The ultimate goal of the project is to create a self-sustaining teacher upskilling process, allowing it to expand independently. Around 25% of all participating teachers choose to take additional training to become qualified teacher trainers themselves. This way, more than 16,000 students across the 6 countries benefitted from the programme in just three years.

The content of the teacher training is tailored to specific needs of each country, and teaching materials for student are translated into local languages.

”We are extremely pleased by the results of
the Code School For Europe programme.”

Hands-on experiences for teachers and students

The educational value of the contents of the programme lies not only in knowledge of coding and robotics but also in the whole host of vitally important transversal skills. By learning to design, plan, and execute coding projects, student have also learnt to:

✅ organise, analyse and present data
✅ formulate and execute instructions
✅ recognise patterns and decompose data

The main operational feature of the programme is its sustained development. The Train-the-trainer model makes it possible to turn even a limited training commitment into impressive outcomes.
