Teacher training for coding and digital skills by Code School Finland and Google

Join Code School Finland’s teacher training program with this form: codeschool.fi/ireland.

Who is this training suitable for?

  • Class teachers for grades 3-9
  • Subject teachers for grades 3-9 (arts, science, maths – any subject)
  • Teachers with no previous coding experience
  • Teachers who have some coding experience will get project ideas and practical advice for further coding projects.

What will the teacher get?

  • Integrate digital skills education into their subject instruction
  • Learn the basics of programming
  • Learn to use programming as a tool to create stories or animations for multi-disciplinary learning
  • Teaching materials for conducting a programming project with students, including student materials, lesson plans and teacher manuals.
  • Code School Finland’s Coding teacher or Trainer certificate

What will the students get?

  • Practise important future skills including computational thinking, creativity and using digital tools
  • Learn the basics of programming 
  • Practise digital creativity by designing and coding their own digital story

What is required for teacher training?

  • Teachers will attend three training sessions 90 minutes each.  These will be organised onsite or online depending on participant preference. For those who cannot attend, a recording will be provided
  • Computer, laptop or a Chromebook and internet access

What is required for conducting the course for students?

  • Minimum 10 x 45 min lessons (or 5 double lessons). 
  • Lessons can be held during school hours or in after-school clubs
  • Computer lab or student  laptops or Chromebooks  (recommendation one computer per 2-3 students)

Schedule

Week 4 Tuesday January 24th 4- 5.30pm Online training session
Week 5 Face-to-face workshop (date to be announced later)
Week 6 Tuesday February 7th 4- 530pm Online training session

February – April 2023

Teachers can conduct the course for students using the materials of the training.  Teachers will have access to the teaching materials during subsequent semesters too.

April – May 2023

For teachers who are interested in helping to train colleagues going forward, this program offers a possibility for obtaining a code trainer certificate. This will require further training that will be organised as follows:

Tuesday 25th April at 4 – 5:30 PM 
Tuesday 2nd May at 4 – 5:30 PM 

Content: Digital creation and coding

Digital creation and coding is an active course for beginner programmers. Students learn key concepts in programming such as objects, loops and conditional statements and how to breathe life into programs with sounds and animations.

The course introduces students to the world’s most used visual programming environment Scratch with plenty of hands-on practice for creation of interactive stories.
